Undergraduate Practice Program: French_Practice

The Department of French Philology, which also trains specialists in Spanish Philology and Italian is taught, was founded in 1897 owing to an outstanding scholar in the field of historical-comparative linguistics Prof. Edvard Porembovych, the honoris causa Doctor of Sorbonne. In the first third of the XXth century Zigmung Cherny (the founder of experimental phonetics and interpretation of artistic text), Prof Kazimir Yaretskyi (known critic, researcher of Vulgar Latin), a brilliant translator Tadeush Boy-Zhelenskyi worked here. Docent O. A. Dombrovskyi (History of French Language, researcher of Dante reception in Ukraine) woked at the Department till the end of the 1970’s. In the post-war period a staff of young lectures was formed, who enriched scientific and methodological traditions of the Department by new findings. Among them can be named: I. I. Obukhivska, C. V. Palyatynska, O. V. Tymofeyeva, M. A. Voytyuk, C. A. Voloshchak.
The Department has been headed by docents O. A. Dombrovskyi, M. A. Voytyuk and C. A. Voloshchak. Since 1983 the head of the Department has been the Professor, Doctor of Philology, Academician of the Academy of High School of Ukraine Roman Semenovych Pomirko, a researcher in the field of contrastive Romance Linguistics and Grammar (“Spanish Language and Its Dialects: Variability of Word”, 1996), problems of Typological Linguistics. For the last 20 years the School of Cognitive Lexicology of Romance Languages has been developed under his supervision. From the mid-1950s till the end of the 1980s the following Candidate’s dissertations in the field of French Philology were defended: On the Problems of Semantics and Stylistics of Prepositional Phrases (І. І. Obukhivska), Derivation (М. А. Voytyuk, О. Т. Pyavka), Linguo-Geography and Historical Linguistics (І. І. Babinchuk), Pronominalization (А. M. Rochnyak), Terminology (L. G. Mishchenko), Metaphorization (І. A. Mandzak), Sentence Syntax (S. V. Palyatynska, S. І. Huz’), Literature Studies and Linguo-Stylistics (О. V. Timofeyeva, L. F. Lvova, G. G. Tsvengrosh, H. М. Kost’). There are many lectures-repatriates from France, Argentina, Uruguay at the Department (І. І. Babinchuk, А. M. Rochnyak, І. A. Mandzak, S. І. Huz’, Z. C. Shakh, S. М. Lushchak, М. D. Klyevtsova). In the 60-70’s the native Spanish speakers F. Ablanedo and H. M. Moreno worked here; and for the last years the Department has frequently been visited by the lecturers from Spain and France. The scientific interests of the Department have been miscellaneous in recent years. 9 Candidate’s dissertations have been defended by: R. V. Khvoshchevskyi, А. R. Semiv, Y. М. Dumashivskyi, Z. T. Hiskozub, О. S. Chaplya, Y. О. Konopatska, N. Y. Strilets’, І. М. Vyhnanska, М. P. Yushchenko.
The State Budget scientific theme is of inter-Departments’nature. The results of the finding were published in the Monograph.
In 1996 – 2000 the Department supervised the European Gramd “TEMPUS-Tacic «Applied Modern Languages» № JEP 10320 – 97”.
The following monographs and manuals have been published in recent years by the following lectures of the Department: І. A. Mandzak, С. D. Trots’, І. Y. Tsymbalistyi, V. G. Mishchenko, B. І. Moroz, H. М. Kost’, Y. О. Konopatska, R. С. Pomirko, М. B. Dubyak, Т. R. Ivanko, М. І. Protsiv, L. S. Pirko, as well as artistic translations by: N. Y. Strilets’, М. P. Yushchenko, Y. Т. Stetsko.
There have been a rise in the cooperation with other similar departments in Ukrainian and foreign universities: Angers, Extremadura, Liverpool, Seville, Amiens.
